SURROUND SYSTEM
What is surround sound?
With ordinary stereo, sound normally comes only from speakers in
front of the listener. In a concert hall or theater though, sound
reflected from the walls and ceiling reaches the listener from all
directions. This is what accounts for the feeling of ambience or
spaciousness of a live performance.
Surround sound works to reproduce these effects to produce a
fuller, more "live" sound.
SURROUND & WIDE
When the surround speakers are not connected, the SURROUND &
WIDE function may be activated. This function enhances the stereo
effect.
Note however, that it does not operate in the case of a monaural
source.
DOLBY SURROUND (XD-J220/DC-J221 only)
Choose this setting for movies and music (especially Video Discs
and video tapes bearing the [){][bousy surrouno] mark) playback.
Dolby Surround decodes the surround information in the source
signal, providing a feeling of left-right and front-back movement
matching the actions on screen.

NOTE:
¢ Jo avoid interference with the picture on a nearby TV set, use
magnetically shielded speaker systems. This is particularly
important for the center speaker since itis usually located closest to
the TV.
¢ Position the left and right channel speakers at equal distances from
the TV set and approximately 1.8 m from each other.
© Surround speakers are best positioned slightly above ear level.
Note:
Dolby Surround will not operate correctly if the signal passes
through a graphic equalizer.

SYSTEME D'AMBIANCE
Qu'est-ce que le son d'ambiance?
Avec une stéréo ordinaire, le son vient normalement uniquement
des enceintes qui sont en face de l'auditeur. Dans une salle de
concert ou un théatre cependant, le son réfléchi par les murs et le
plafond atteint l'auditeur dans toutes les directions. C'est pour cela
que l'on ressent cette ambiance d'espace dans une représentation
en direct.
Le son d'ambiance travaille 4 reproduire ces effets pour donner un
son plein plus "vivant".
Ambiance et stéréo élargie (SURROUND & WIDE)
Lorsque des enceintes d'ambiance ne sont pas raccordées, la
fonction SURROUND & WIDE peut étre activée. Cette fonction
accentue l'effet stéréo.
Noter cependant qu'elle ne fonctionne pas dans le cas d'une source
monaurale.
Ambiance Dolby (DOLBY SURROUND) (XD-J220/DC-J221
seulement)
Choisir ce réglage pour des films et de la musique (en particulier
pour la reproduction de disques vidéo et de bandes vidéo portant la
marque [[(][potsy surnouno)).
L'ambiance Dolby décode les informations d'ambiance dans le
signal de source, donnant la sensation d'un mouvement gauche-
droite et avant-arriére correspondant aux actions sur |'écran.

REMARQUE:
¢ Pour éviter des interférences avec I'image d'un téléviseur placé a
proximité, utiliser des systémes d'enceintes _ blindés
magnétiquement.
© Positionner les enceintes canal gauche et canal droit a égale
distance du téléviseur et 4 approximativement 1,8 métre I'une de
Yautre.
¢ La meilleure position des enceintes d'ambiance est légérement au-
dessus du niveau des oreilles.
Remarque:
L'ambiance Dolby ne fonctionne pas correctement si le signal
passe par un égaliseur graphique.
