I.
Apply conformal coating to all repaired areas per paragraph 3.
3. Conformal Coating
CAUTION: CUTTING AND SCRAPING CONFORMAL COATING MAY CAUSE AIRBORNE PARTICLES
TO ENTER THE EYES. WEAR GOGGLES TO PROTECT EYES.
A. Removal
Remove conformal coating from rework areas with a chisel-tip soldering iron, or by carefully
cutting and scraping in conjunction with either of these procedures:
(1) Oven-heat the assembly to 160°F to soften the coating.
(2) Remove conformal coating in conjunction with part removal by a vacuum-solder removal
device, provided that the surrounding encapsulant does not exhibit any evidence of
scorching or burning.
WARNING: CONFORMAL COATING IS FLAMMABLE AND TOXIC TO EYES, SKIN, AND RESPI-
RATORY TRACT. DO NOT BREATHE VAPORS. USE IN WELL-VENTILATED AREA
FREE FROM SPARKS, FLAME, OR HOT SURFACES. WEAR SPLASH GOGGLES,
SOLVENT-RESISTANT GLOVES, AND OTHER PROTECTIVE GEAR. IN CASE OF
EYE CONTACT, FLUSH WITH WATER AND SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION. IN CASE
OF SKIN CONTACT, WASH WITH SOAP AND WATER.
CAUTION: APPLY CONFORMAL COATING ONLY WHEN PWB CIRCUITS ARE GROUNDED. RE-
FER TO DOD-HDBK-263.
B. Application
Apply conformal coating to all replaced components, repaired areas, and new solder joints
per these steps:
(1) Clean PWB assembly per CLEANING section.
(2) Coating may be applied by brushing, dipping, or spraying.
(3) Cure coating per manufacturer's instructions.
4. Solder
CAUTION: USE MINIMUM HEAT AND A HEAT SINK WHEN DESOLDERING/SOLDERING PARTS TO
PREVENT DAMAGE TO PARTS AND PWB.
A. Remove old solder as necessary. Mechanically secure leads and wires before soldering.
Wrap leads and wires around part leads from a minimum of 1/2 turn to a maximum of 1 turn.
B. Solder per MIL-STD-454, Requirement 5.
5. Wire
A. Reconnect/replace wires as required. Refer to wiring diagram for usage and size.
NOTE: Label wires to be removed. When necessary to disturb the arrangement of the wires,
ensure that the original arrangement is restored.
B. Sleeve wires as necessary to prevent shorting.
6. Painted Surfaces
A. Feather chips and scratches with fine-grit sandpaper or crocus cloth.
B. Clean feathered areas with a clean cloth dipped in isopropyl alcohol (Ref. Fig. 601). Wipe dry
