Replacing the Grass Deflector

WARNING
An uncovered discharge opening could allow the
lawn mower to throw objects in the operator's or
bystander's direction and result in serious injury.
Also, contact with the blade could occur.
Never operate the lawn mower unless you install a
cover plate, a mulch plate, grass deflector or bagger.
1. Remove the locknut, bolt, spring and spacer holding
the deflector to the pivot brackets
Note: Remove the damaged or worn grass deflector.

2. Place the spacer and spring onto the grass deflector.
Place one J-hook end of the spring behind the deck
edge.
Note: Install one J-hook end of the spring is installed
behind the deck edge before installing the bolt as
shown in
Figure
61.
3. Install the bolt and nut. Place one J-hook end of the
spring around the grass deflector
Important: The grass deflector must be able
to rotate. Lift the deflector up to the fully open
position and ensure that it rotates into the fully
down position.

Storage

1. Disengage the power take-off (PTO), set the parking
brake, turn the ignition key to the Off position, and
remove the key.
2. Remove grass clippings, dirt, and grime from the
external parts of the entire machine, especially the
engine. Clean dirt and chaff from the outside of the
engine cylinder-head fins and the blower housing.
Important: You can wash the machine with mild
detergent and water. Do not pressure-wash the
machine. Avoid excessive use of water, especially
near the shift-lever plate and the engine.
3. Check the brakes; refer to
32).
4. Service the air cleaner; refer to
Cleaner (page
26).
5. Grease and lubricate the machine; refer to
(page
25).
6. Change the engine oil; refer to
Oil (page
27).
7. Check the tire pressure; refer to
Pressure (page
31).
8. For long-term storage:
A. Add stabilizer/conditioner additive to fuel in the
tank.
B. Run the engine to distribute conditioned fuel
through the fuel system (5 minutes).
C. Stop the engine, allow it to cool, and drain the
fuel tank; refer to Servicing the Fuel Tank in
System Maintenance (page
until it stops.
D. Start the engine and run it until it stops. Repeat
the process, with the choke on, until the engine
will not start.
E. Dispose of fuel properly. Recycle it according to
local codes.
Note: Do not store stabilizer/conditioned
gasoline over 90 days.
9. Condition the engine for storage as follows:
A. Remove the spark plug(s) and check the condition;
refer to
Removing the Spark Plugs (page
B. Pour 2 tablespoons of engine oil into the engine
through each spark-plug hole.
C. Rotate the engine using the starter of the machine.
Note: Rotating the engine distributes the oil
inside the cylinder.
D. Install the spark plug(s).
Note: Do not connect the spark-plug wires to
the spark plugs.
