6.2.8. APPROACH EXAMPLE 2: RADAR VECTORS

When airports have an approach control that is in a radar environment it is
likely you will receive radar vectors from the approach controller to inter-
cept the course inbound to the final approach fix (FAF). The KLN 94
makes it easy to conduct approaches where vectors are provided. There
is no need to change to OBS mode in order to get established inbound to
the FAF.
We will use the VOR 17L approach at Lincoln Municipal (KLNK) as an
example of an approach where vectors are provided (figure 6-29). Notice
that Lincoln VOR (LNK) is the FAF and that the inbound course to LNK is
185° and the course from LNK to RW17L, the MAP, is 177°. The ATC
controller will provide vectors to intercept the 185° course to LNK.
Loading an approach in FPL 0 where vectors are going to be provided is
similar to the example of loading an approach provided in section 6.2.3.
However, there are a few minor differences so we'll go through an exam-
ple of loading an approach for radar vectors.
To select an approach for radar vectors:
1. Press the P button to bring up
the PROC 1 page (figure 6-30).
The cursor will already be over
Select Approach?.
2. Press F to display the
PROC 2 page (figure 6-31). If
KLNK is in FPL 0 or is our Direct
To waypoint then KLNK will be in
the list. Use the right outer knob
to move the cursor over KLNK if
it is not already there.
3. Press F to display a list of
approaches for KLNK. Use the
right outer knob to move the cur-
sor over VOR 17L (figure 6-32).
4. Press F to display a list of ini-
tial approach fixes (IAFs). The
cursor is already over Vectors
(figure 6-33).
NOTE: If you know radar vectors will
be provided, select Vectors. If you
are not sure, select the IAF waypoint
appropriate for your route. If you later
