All guards MUST be installed on your shaper
before operating it. Shapers are dangerous
machines that can quickly cause serious
injury if some kind of guard is not used. To
protect yourself, read and follow the entire
instruction manual carefully and do addi-
tional research on shop made guards and
safety jigs.
For irregular shaping:
1.
Remove the fence assembly.
2.
Choose the appropriate cutter for your appli-
cation and lock it in place.
3.
Check the rotation of the cutter.
4.
Adjust the spindle height to align your
workpiece to the cutter.
5.
Insert a starting pin (Figure 40) into the table
surface, using the pin location that best sup-
ports your work.
Figure 40. Inserting starting pin.
6.
Use some type of hold-down fixture and guard
when doing freehand work. See Figure 41.

Incorrectly feeding stock—feeding with the
rotation of the cutter—creates a potentially
uncontrollable feed situation may pull stock
from your hands. Follow the above instruc-
tion all the time or serious personal injury
can occur.
7.
Make a sample cut on a piece of scrap
wood.
8.
If everything is correct, feed your workpiece
along the cutter, using firm pressure to keep
your work against the rub collar. Feed against
the cutter rotation only.
Sometimes the starting pin will not be in the most
advantageous position. Firmly clamp a board in
the desired position to act as a starting pin. See
Figure 42. Some type of pivot point must be
used. Notice in Figures 41 & 42 the operator
is not exposed to the cutting edge of the cutter.
Cutters are removing material from the bottom of
the workpiece.

needed. (Guard removed for clarity.)
