Composting

NOTICE: Composting contents may stain some surfaces
such as concrete or masonry. Cover or protect areas before
placing composting unit on them.
The length of composting time depends on the moisture,
ventilation and temperature of the mix.
1. Choose a location for your composter that receives
moderate sunlight with enough room around it to safely
rotate the barrel.
on the
2. Use proper ratios of Greens (Nitrogens) to Browns (Carbons)
- approximately, one part Greens to two parts Browns.
and
3. Moisture content is important. The mix should feel like a damp
sponge. Check every two or three days to ensure proper
moisture levels. To check moisture levels, grab a handful of
.
compost from the composter barrel and squeeze it.
-
If you can squeeze out water, the compost is too wet.
-
If the compost does not release water but crumbles
apart, the compost is too dry. Add a little water and
rotate the barrel a few times to mix it in.
-
If the compost does not release water but stays
compacted, the moisture level is correct.
4. Turn the composter barrel every two or three days after the
batch heats up to help aerate the mix and encourage faster
decomposition of the materials.
