Step-by-Step
Notes:
If a 4500 thermostat does not respond to the 4286 phone module for 2 minutes, the phone module will
announce, "Check thermostat (1/2). (Descriptor)," instead of the temperature.
If the temperature falls below 37° F (3° C), the 4286 phone module will announce, "Check thermostat
(1/2). (Descriptor)," instead of the temperature. See Trouble Shooting Below.
Troubleshooting the 4500
Following the procedures in the 4286 Installation Instructions manual should result in a minimum number of system
problems. If you experience problems that relate to the use of the 4500 thermostat(s), first check the possible
resolution of some typical thermostat problems that follow.
Thermostat is in check (4286 announces "Check Thermostat," or the yellow light is flashing on the 4500):
1. Check that the DIP switch on each thermostat is properly set, and that the 4500 thermostat addresses have
been properly programmed in the 4286 programming mode.
2. Check the connections from the 4286 to the 4500, and make sure that the cable connecting the 4500s to the
4286 faces the correct direction (yellow toward the corner of the 4286 board).
Heat is cycling on and off too often.
1. Increase the amount of "span" as described in the section "Programming the 4286 to add 4500 thermostats"
in Section 4 of this manual.
2. Make sure that the location where the 4500 is mounted is free of drafts.
Temperature in the room swings too widely when the 4500 is set to "ACTIVE" mode.
1. Decrease the amount of span as described in the section "Programming the 4286 to add 4500 thermostats"
in Section 4 of the manual. Also see figure 7 above for programming locations.
Troubleshooting the 4286:
Problem: "When I enter the phone code on premise the operator comes on or I get a busy signal."
Answer: This means the Voice Module does not hear the code entered. This can be caused by too many things, so
narrow the problem down by attempting to call it from off premise. How far do you get from off premise?
1. Panel answers, gives download tone but 4286 does not come on.
Problem is caused by Reason 3 or 5. (See Next Page)
2. Panel answers, gives download tone; voice module comes on but does not accept code.
Problem caused by Reason 1 or 4. (See Next Page)
3. Panel answers, gives download, voice module comes on and accepts code from off premise.
Site problem is caused by Reason 2 or 4 (See Next Page)
4. Check for Line seizure
Problem: "Check 104 (10/15/20p series controls) or check 804 (32/128/250 series controls)", also will complain the
voice module does not work.
Answer: This means the panel does not see the 4286, so of course it does not work.
1. This can only be caused by Reason 3 or 5. (See Next Page)
Problem: "Call into System Off", when the customer tries to remote access.
Answer: This means the 4286 is not configured for remote access.
1. To toggle on or off enter Code #91 on the keypad.
Keypad beeps twice means it is on
Keypad beeps once means it is off
