[3] Troubleshooting on Ignition system
Is Spark plug dry and properly installed?
Yes
Remove Spark plug. Does Spark plug has damage?
Is Spark plug different from the spec. ?
Is there carbon black on the electrodes?
No
Is the gap of Spark plug correct? (should be 0.5 mm)
Yes
Does Spark plug flood or does it have carbon deposits?
No
Test Ignition system with 1R181, or do as follows:
Remove Spark plug from Cylinder, without
disconnecting Spark plug connector and Spark plug.
Then attach Spark plug to Cylinder with Insulated
pliers and pull Starter rope to check the spark on
the gap of Spark plug.
Note: To avoid the danger of electric shock/explosion;
Do not touch Spark plug directly by hand.
Do not attach Spark plug to the area around
the plug hole of Cylinder.
Yes
Is there damage to Insulation of High-voltage cable or
Ignition cable, or coils of Igniton coil?
No
Is the gap between Flywheel and Ignition coil 0.25-0.3
mm?
Is the gap even without any contact/ wear?
No
Remove Flywheel and check the shape.
Does Flywheel has damage?
Does the keyway of Flywheel has damage?
No
Continue troubleshooting. Check Tank, Fuel hose,
Carburetor.
No
Dry Spark plug connector and fasten it firmly to Spark plug.
Replace Spark plug. Use Makita genuine Spark plug.
Yes
See operating manual! Otherwise Ignition module might be
damaged.
Eliminate the causes for carbon deposits on electrodes (bad
two-stroke oil, wrong mix defective air filter, inapproriate
carburetor adjsutment.)
Use Makita high-performance two-stroke oil.
No
Adjust the gap of Spark plug
to 0.5 mm with 1R366.
Yes
Wash spark plug in acetone. Do not sandblast Spark plug!
If necessary, replace Spark plug.
Eliminate the causes: wrong carburetor setting, too much
No
Replace spark plug and ckeck Ignition module for corrosion,
if necessary.
No
Has the trouble been resolved?
Check the radial play of Drive shaft, and repair if needed.
Yes
Replace Ignition module if traces of overheating become
visible.
No
Adjust the gap between Flywheel and Ignition coil correctly.
Replace Flywheel. Before installation, wipe the taper
Yes
contacts of Drive shaft and Flywheel with acetone or alcohol
to remove any grease. Tighten M8x1 Hex nut to the correct
torque!
Has the trouble been resloved?
No
Replace Ignition module. Has the trouble been resloved?
0.5 mm
2-stroke oil mixture in gosoline,
frequently and brief run of Engine.
