To alternate between normal-speed playback and shuttle-mode
playback
After setting the search dial to the required playback speed, press the
PLAY button and SHUTTLE button alternately to switch between normal-
speed playback and shuttle-mode playback.
To stop and start shuttle-mode playback, press the STOP button and
SHUTTLE button respectively.
Note
The search dial is factory set to start jog or shuttle mode playback in all
other operation modes whenever you rotate the dial.
For details on cancelling this factory setting and making it a requirement to press
the JOG/SHUTTLE/VAR button to start Jog/Shuttle/Variable mode playback, refer
to "3-2-1 Items That Require Setting for Operations" on page 3-2.
Follow the procedure below to play back in variable mode.

Press the VAR button so that the VAR button lights.
The p indicator lights and the VTR enters still-picture mode.
Whenever you turn on the VTR, always set the search dial to the center
position, so that the p indicator lights.

Rotate the search dial in the direction of playback until the angle of
rotation corresponds to the playback speed that you want.

The playback speed corresponds to the angle of rotation of the search
dial. One of the direction indicators (Z or z) lights to show the
direction of playback.
The search dial clicks at the positions for still-picture and normal-
speed playback.

To stop variable-mode playback, set the search dial to the center
position for still-picture, or press the STOP button for stop mode.
