5. Attach the specimen stub to the height-adjustment screw.

6. Set up the specimen stub on the specimen height gauge to adjust its height.
NOTE : When conducting EDX analysis with an EDX detector optionally attached, use a
specimen height gauge designed for it.
7. As shown in Figure 4.2.2-6, adjust the height so that the gap between the specimen
height gauge and the topmost surface of the specimen will be approximately 1 mm (0.5 to
1.5 mm). As shown in Figure 4.2.2-7, loosen the lock nut 1 and turn the height adjustment
screw to adjust the height. Then tighten the lock nut 1onto the lock nut 2 to secure the
specimen stub. In addition, rotate the lock nut 2 once on the specimen height gauge to
confirm any part of the specimen surface does not contact the gauge. There are two
pieces of the height adjustment screw. Choose either of the two, depending on the
specimen height as below. When the specimen height is not greater than 25 mm, use the
screw L. When the specimen height ranges from 25 mm to 50 mm, use the screw S.
