Troubleshooting

Problem
The engine will not start.
The engine runs rough.
Chipping action seems slow or the
flywheel is stalling.
The flywheel does not rotate.
Drive belt is worn, burned, or jumps off of
pulley.
The machine has excessive vibration.
Possible Cause
1. The choke is open.
2. The fuel tank is empty.
3. The spark plug wire is loose or
disconnected.
1. The choke is left on.
2. The air filter is clogged.
3. The fuel line is clogged.
4. There is water or contaminants in the
fuel.
5. The spark plugs are worn or have
buildup on the electrodes.
1. The engine speed is too slow causing
the clutch to slip.
2. Check for a loose or damaged drive
belt.
3. Check for dull or damaged blades.
4. The clutch shoes are worn.
1. Build-up of chips and debris around
flywheel.
2. The belt is loose or damaged.
3. The clutch overheated, is damaged, or
the shoes are worn.
1. Improper drive belt adjustment.
2. The drive belt may be stretched.
3. Pulleys are out of alignment.
1. Check for dull or damaged blades.
2. Blades may not be properly seated on
the flywheel.
3. Gap between the blades and cutter
block is too great.

Corrective Action
1. Close the choke when starting a cold
engine.
2. Fill the tank with fresh fuel.
3. Check the electrode gap and clean or
replace the spark plug.
1. Open the choke.
2. Clean or replace the air filter.
3. Clean the sediment cup.
4. Drain and fill the tank with fresh fuel.
5. Check the electrode gap and clean or
replace the spark plug.
1. Run the engine at full throttle.
2. Tighten or replace the drive belt.
3. Replace with sharp blades.
4. Replace the clutch.
1. Clean out the build-up of chips and
debris around the flywheel, on the outer
diameter of the wheel, upper lid of the
grinder, and inside the housing cover.
2. Check the drive belt.
3. Replace the clutch.
1. Check the drive belt tension.
2. Replace the drive belt.
3. Align the engine/clutch pulley with
flywheel.
1. Replace with sharp blades.
2. Loosen the blade mounting screws,
reset the blades and tighten the screws.
3. Adjust the flywheel position in the
housing to attain a 1/8 inch (3 mm)
clearance between the blade and cutter
block.
