ADJUSTING THE VALVE CLEARANCE

The following procedure applies to all of the
valves.
TIP
• Valve clearance adjustment should be made
on a cold engine, at room temperature.
• When the valve clearance is to be measured or
adjusted, the piston must be at top dead center
(TDC) on the compression stroke.
1. Remove:
• Storage compartment
Refer to "GENERAL CHASSIS" on page 4-1.
2. Remove:
• Radiator bracket
Refer to "RADIATOR" on page 6-1.
3. Remove:
• Air filter case
• Throttle body
• Intake manifolds
Refer to "THROTTLE BODY" on page 7-5.
4. Remove:
• Spark plugs
• Cylinder head cover
• Cylinder head cover gasket
Refer to "CAMSHAFTS" on page 5-6.
5. Remove:
• Timing mark accessing plug "1"
• Crankshaft end access cover "2"
6. Measure:

a. Turn the crankshaft clockwise.
b. When piston #1 is at TDC on the compres-

erator rotor with the mark "b" on the generator
cover.
when the cylinder #1 camshaft lobes are
turned away from each other.
alignment hole "c" on the intake camshaft
sprocket and the alignment hole "d" on the ex-
haust camshaft sprocket must align with the
cylinder head mating surface as shown in the
illustration.
