SHOCK ABSORBERS
One shock absorber is located at the front of the rear
suspension; the other is located at the rear. The shock ab-
sorber is charged with high pressure gas. A coil spring is
mounted on each shock absorber. The removal and ser-
vice procedure are different for the various models.
Front Shock
1. Remove the rear suspension as described in this chap-
ter.
2. Push the front arm down to relieve pressure from the
limiter strap(s). Then remove the bolts (A, Figure 7) from
the limiter strap(s).
3. Release the pressure on the front suspension arm al-
lowing the shock to extend.
4. Remove the bolts securing the front shock absorber (B,
Figure 7) and remove the shock absorber.
5. Remove the shock bushings and inspect them for wear
or damage. Replace bushings if necessary.
6. Inspect the shock absorbers as described in this chap-
ter.
7. Installation is the reverse of the removal steps. Ob-

a. Apply a light coat of low-temperature grease to the
bushings.

Shock Inspection
1. Remove the spring from the shock absorber as follows:
Secure the bottom of the shock absorber in a vise
with soft jaws.
Attach a suitable spring compressor to the shock ab-

remove the spring retainer (Figure 9, typical) from
the shock.
Remove the spring.
Remove the spring from the compressor tool and

Do not attempt to disassemble the shock
damper housing.
2. Clean all components thoroughly in solvent and allow
to dry.
3. Inspect the spring and retainer as follows:
a. Check the spring for cracks or damage. If the spring
is in good condition, compare the free length to that
of a new spring. Replace the spring if it has sagged
significantly.
