8. Install a new gasket onto the crankcase and position the
reed assembly into the crankcase opening.
9. Install the spacer (Figure 46) into the reed valve hous-
ing.
10. Install the carburetor adapter onto the reed valve
housing. Tighten the carburetor adapter retaining screws
evenly to 14 N*m (1 24 in.-lb.).
11. Install the carburetor(s) as described in Chapter Five.
Inspection
1. Carefully examine the removed reed valve assembly
(Figure 46) for visible signs of wear, distortion or dam-
age.
2. If any reed petal is chipped or broken, install new
reeds.
3. Check the coating on the reed cage for separation or
other damage.
CAUTION
Do not attempt to bend the stop plate while
it is mounted on the reed valve block. This
may severely damage it. Replace the stop
plate i f it is excessively bent or damaged.

Use a scale or vernier caliper, to measure the height of
the reed stop. Measure from the end of the reed stop to the
reed valve seat (Figure 47). Compare the measured dis-
tance with the specification listed in Table 2 or Table 3.
5. Measure the clearance between the reed valve to the
seat with a feeler gauge (Figure 48). If the clearance is 0.6
NOTE
Screw threads may be coated with Loctite
and it may be necessary to apply heat before
loosening the screws.
6. Remove the screws (Figure 49) securing the reed stop
and reed petals to the reed cage. Be careful that the serew-
driver does not slip and damage parts.
7. Carefully examine the removed parts for cracks, fa-
tigue marks, distortion or other damage.

9. Assemble the unit as follows.
a. Make sure all the parts are clean and free of even
very small dirt particles or lint.
b. Locate the beveled comers of the reed petal and the
stop (Figure 50). Align these beveled comers at the
right comer during assembly.
c. Install the reed valve so the concave side is toward
the housing.

Disassembling the crankcase (splitting the case halves)
and removing the crankshaft assembly requires engine re-
