Tensioning Return
Spring
The spring tension for automatic quill recoil has
been pre-set at the factory. It should not need
adjustment under most normal circumstances. If
it does need adjustment, the spring housing is
located on the left side of the headstock.
If the return spring should
come loose from the spring
cap and rapidly unwind,
laceration or impact inju-
ries could occur. Always
wear heavy leather gloves
and safety glasses when
adjusting the return spring
tension.
To adjust spring tension:
1.
DISCONNECT MACHINE FROM POWER!
2.
PUT ON SAFETY GLASSES!
3.
Loosen thumb knob shown in Figure 44
2–3 turns (DO NOT completely remove
thumb knob).

Wearing gloves, pull spring cover (Figure
45) out enough so notches just clear roll pin.
HOLD SPRING COVER TIGHTLY during this
step, or force of spring will cause cover to
spin out of your hands.

The depth stop can be calibrated to improve
accuracy. Make sure the spindle is retracted all
the way into the quill, then follow the steps below.
To calibrate depth stop:

Rotate cover counterclockwise to increase
tension, then push cover back in to engage

Figure 45, then retighten thumb knob.

Lower depth stop (see Figure 46) until point-
er reaches bottom of its travel.
Loosen button head cap screw shown in
Figure 46, and position pointer so its upper
edge aligns with zero, then re-tighten screw.
