2. Sit down on the seat.
3. Set the parking brake; refer to Setting the Parking
Brake, page 12.
Note: The engine will not start unless you set the parking
brake or fully depress the brake pedal.
4. Disengage the PTO (Fig. 10).
Note: The engine will not start if the PTO is engaged.
5. When starting a cold engine, move the choke lever to
the On position (Fig. 10).
Note: To start a warm engine, move the choke lever to the
Off position.
6. Move the throttle lever to the Slow position (Fig. 11).
7. Turn the ignition key clockwise and hold it in the Start
position (Fig. 11). When the engine starts, release the
key.
Important
If the engine does not start after 15 seconds
of continuous cranking, turn the ignition key to Off and let
the starter motor cool for two minutes; refer to
Troubleshooting, page 33.
8. After the engine starts, slowly move the choke lever to
Off (Fig. 10) and the throttle lever to Fast (Fig. 11).

Stopping
1. Move the throttle lever to Slow (Fig. 11).
Important
To prevent backfiring and damage to the
engine, do not move the choke lever to On or the throttle
lever to Fast to stop the engine.
2. Turn the ignition key to Off (Fig. 11).
Note: If the engine has been working hard or is hot, let it
idle for a minute before turning the ignition key Off. This
helps cool the engine before it is stopped. In an emergency,
the engine may be stopped by turning the ignition key to
Off.

The Safety Interlock System

Caution
If safety interlock switches are disconnected or
damaged the machine could operate unexpectedly
causing personal injury.
Do not tamper with the interlock switches.
Check the operation of the interlock switches
daily and replace any damaged switches before
operating the machine.
Replace switches every two years regardless of
whether they are operating properly or not.
