PRE-OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Carefully unpack your Air Purifier. Select a firm, level place where there
are no obstructions to the air inlet (front grill) or filtered air outlet
(top of unit). A good location in a room is about 2 feet above the
floor, and approximately 1 foot away from the wall, in a central location
of your home.
2. Remove front grill by pressing in the grill release buttons on either
side of the grill and pulling it forward towards you (See fig. 1).
3. Remove the HEPA Filter by gripping on both sides and pulling forward
(fig. 2).
4. Remove protective plastic bag from the filter cartridge. Write the
installation date on the cartridge then re-install the cartridge by tilting
the cartridge top toward you as you insert the bottom of the cartridge
fully into the filter recess.
NOTE: Air Flow arrows on the cartridge must face away from you towards
the filter recess.
5. Replace front grill into unit.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Plug into a 120V AC electrical outlet.
2. Select the desired operating speed; HI, NORMAL, or QUIET, by sliding
the switch to the appropriate setting. The red power light will now
illuminate.
3. To release negative ions into the filtered air, slide the ion button to
ON the green ion light will now illuminate.
4. For optimum air filtration, it is recommended to operate the air puri-
fier continuously. Its rugged motor has been designed to give many
years of use.
For continuous use, it is recommended to operate the air purifier at the
NORMAL setting. For quieter operation or use in a bedroom, select the
QUIET setting. When high levels of air pollution are present, select the
HI setting to quickly circulate and filter the room air.

CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS
Turn off and unplug the unit before cleaning
1. The outside of the air purifier can be cleaned with a soft, clean,
dampened cloth.
2. The front grill can be removed and washed in warm, soapy water
(NOT dishwasher safe). Dry before replacing in the unit.
3. The top air outlet grill can be cleaned of dust with a small, soft brush.
WARNING: Do not allow moisture to come in contact with the main
housing of the air purifier.
FILTER REPLACEMENT INSTRUCTIONS
1. Every few weeks, check the condition of the filters.
2. Remove the front grill. Examine the foam pre-filter. If the pre-filter
has collected a noticeable amount of dust or lint, remove it from the
inlet of the grill and wash it in warm, soapy water. Rinse and drip dry
the pre-filter thoroughly before replacing it into the inlet of the grill.
3. With the front inlet removed, check the HEPA filter. Match the color of
the pleated filter to the colors shown on the Filter Condition Indicator
label. If the filter has changed from white to a dark gray or brown
color, it is time to replace the filter. Remove the used HEPA cartridge
and dispose of in the garbage. DO NOT try to wash and re-use the
HEPA filter. Replace with a new HEPA HAPF30 filter, removing the pro-
tective polybag before inserting into the air purifier.
4. Filter Life - Under normal conditions of continuous use, the HEPA filter
will operate efficiently for 6 to 8 months.
5. Replacement filter (HAPF30) are available from your local supplier or
by calling 1-800-5-Holmes.
OPTIONAL BOOSTER FILTER (HAPF31)
1. An optional booster filter can be installed in your air purifier. This
booster filter will help remove unpleasant odors, and extend the life
of your main HEPA filter.
2. Under normal conditions of odor removal, the activated carbon layer
in the main filter cartridge may lose its efficiency in 2 to 3 months.
The use of the booster filter can extend the odor removal for another
2 to 3 months, for a total of 4 to 6 months of odor removal. In addi-
tion, the booster filter helps trap larger particles, thereby extending
the life of the HEPA filter.
E
3. The booster filter should be removed from its protective bag and
F
inserted into the recess between the foam pre-filter and the HEPA fil-
ter, as shown in figure 1.
G
4. The booster filters are available in packs of 2, and are only available
through The Customer Service Department at The Holmes Group, Inc.
To order the booster filter, please see page 4.
H
Please Note: The HAPF30 filter consists of the HEPA filter and an
activated carbon layer.

SOLUTION
• Check to make sure the unit is plugged in
• Check to make sure the unit is on by
pressing the power switch.
• Compare the color of the HEPA filter to the
filter indicator in the unit. If the filter is
gray or black, it is time to change the filter.
• The Ionizer may increase performance. Put
the Ionizer in the ON position to assist the
filter in particle removal.
