Overview The Ciena Service Delivery Switch (SDS) products provide Ethernet connectivity to buildings and residences to deliver high-speed voice, video, and data connectivity. SDS devices are designed to lower the overall cost of building out a fiber network. The 3916 small SDS is a low port count Carrier Ethernet platform providing premium Ethernet capability and targeting highly competitive Network Termination and Intelligent Demarcation applications.

WARNING The chassis of the 3916 should never be opened under any circumstances. Opening the chassis will void the warranty. The system chassis must be returned to Ciena for service or replacement. Power supply modules and transceivers are field-replaceable, however, the modules or transceivers must be returned to Ciena for service or replacement.
Common Bonding Network (CBN). The supplemental ground connection is required on 3916 DC Standard installations. The supplemental ground connection is optional on 3916 AC Standard and 3916 Dual AC Standard installations. Mini chassis systems do not require a supplemental ground connection.

2-12 Installation Connecting Cables to the 3916 When connecting cables to the 3916, always make only one connection at a time. Ciena recommends that cables be connected in the following order: • Fiber cables first • Ethernet cables last In order for two devices to communicate properly, the transmit ports on the first device must be connected to the receive ports of the second device.
Ensure that the reinforced mounting surface is capable of supporting at least 5 pounds. Creating a New User Account The 3916 is preconfigured with default user accounts. The default user accounts are common to all Ciena Carrier Ethernet products and are not confidential. When you turn-up the system you need to configure new user accounts and delete the default accounts in order to protect the system.
Power Status LEDs The placement of power status LEDs varies from system to system as follows: • 3916 AC Standard — no power supply LEDs. The power to the system is either on or off. • 3916 DC Standard — no power supply LEDs. The power to the system is either on or off.
