High speed should n ever b e
employed, asitwilt c ause o verheat-
ingand quickly dull t heedges o fboth
chisel and bit.Best r esults are
obtained byusing s peeds ranging
from 2300 to4250 RPM, depending
upon thetype ofstock t obecut. I t is
recommended
thatlower speeds be
used forsoft w ood.
Care should b eexercised when feed-
ingthetool i ntothe work. Inworking
with hard woods a nd other woods
that a remore difficult tomachine, it is
advisable touse a slower feed rate.
SHARPENING THECHISEL
NOTE: Best r esults a reobtained when
thechisel issharpened witha conical-
shaped m ounted grinding p oint.
CAUTION: Donotattempt tohold the
chisel inthehands.
° Chuck t heconical-shaped
mounted
grinding p oint i nthedrill p ress and
clamp t hechisel i nanadequate
holding d evice.
° Grind theinside ofthechisel only;
donotbevel theoutside e dges.
Grind onlyenough toremove nicks
and produce a sharp edge.
• Keep allfourcutting c orners t he
same length.
• After g rinding, thewire edge onthe
outside m ay beremoved withavery
light a pplication offineemery c loth,
ora flatoilstone.
CAUTION: Donotoverheat thechisel
during thegrinding o peration, asthe
temper ofthemetal might bedestroyed.
SHARPENING T HEBIT
• Use a very finefiletosharpen t he
bit.File from below, allowing thefile
topass over t hetopsurface o fthe
cutting t ipsintothechannel through
which thechips pass. The cutting
lipsshould beofequal length a fter
filing.
° File theinside lipsonly, a ndmake
sure they areequal inlength w hen
filing iscompleted.
• Never filetheoutside c ircumference
ofthebit.It ispurposely larger i n
diameter atitspoint t ominimize the
chisel cut, a ndthus reduce t hedrill
press feeding f orce required.
