Mortising chisel kit

Make sureslot f ormed b ythetwo-
piece bushing i sfacing towards the
front o fmachine. Insert the66mm
split b ushing intothehousing with
slotofbushing aligned w iththeslot
ofthehousing. Position housing over
quill a nd clamp housing ontothe
two-piece bushing, making s urethat
thumb screw faces away f rom the
drill p ress c olumn.
NOTE: Use only corresponding
sizeof
bitandchisel. For e xample 1/4" bitis
used only withV4" chisel. Both bitand
chisel must b esharp. Ifeither o neis
dull, t here wiltbeexcessive friction w ith
consequent
heat, d amaging thepoints.
° Insert thebitandchisel (Key Nos.
13and14)through t hebore inthe
housing (Key No. 1 ).Clamp t hechis-
elsothattheupper s urface o fits
shoulder is about V=" b elow the
housing andtighten t humb s crew
(Key No. 6 )lightly. Push thebitup
through t hechisel asfarasitwill g o
and fasten indrill c huck s ecurely.
The slotinthechisel should f ace
either l eftorright, n ever tofront o r
rear.
• Release thethumb screw holding
thechisel, push chisel upward t o
take upthe_/32"
space, and then
tighten t hethumb screw securely.
This method o fmounting ensures
that t here isproper clearance
between cutting e dges ofthebit
and thepoints o fthechisel.
• Fence a ssembly ispositioned such
that t hechisel wilt t ravel through t he
notch atthebottom oftheclamp
(Key No. 7 ).Place T -nuts ( Key No.
12)intheslots ofdrill p ress t able
underneath
slots inthefence.
Secure fence inposition u sing ratch-
ethandles and flatwashers (Key
Nos. 8 and15).
• For t hrough m ortising, itisrecom-
mended that a
W' plywood panel be
installed on the drill press table. It can
be held in place by inserting it under
the mortising fence. Drill holes in the
plywood to match the slots in the
table and fence. The plywood panel
will prevent damage to the chisel if it
strikes the table by accident and also
serves to increase the size of the
table. Secure fence with T-nuts,
%"-18 bolts and fiat washers.
DESCRIPTION
Refer to Figure 1.
The Craftsman Mortising Chisel Kit con-
verts most drill presses into an accurate
mortising machine. Sturdy cast iron
housing can be mounted onto a 40, 48,
50, 60, 66 or 75mm quill diameter. The
%" bore guides the mortising chisel
which can be secured with thumb
screw. This kit is used with a %"
capacity key chuck.
MORTISING
CAUTION:
Know the accessory and
the power tool. Read and understand all
owner's manuals and other instructions
provided.

Raise the chisel frequently during
operation to allow free discharge of
chips and prevent clogging the bit.
To ensure a clean joint, each suc-
cessive cut should overlap the previ-
ous cut endwise approximately
W'.
When cutting harder woods,
increase the overlap.
°
Mortise cuts, wider than the chisel,
may be made by overlapping laterally.
°
It is recommended
that a fence or
guide by used to insure straight, uni-
form edges along the finished cut.
