Comm Software
upload or download a file over the Internet. FTP client
software operates independently of your web browser.
Many times, however, you may not even need an FTP
client to download files over the Internet. Web browsers
such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape
Communicator/Navigator allow you to download files
and even navigate FTP server directories using the
browser itself.
Most web sites offer direct links right on the page for
file downloads. When you click on the file name on the
web page, the transfer begins. When you click on the
file you want to download, watch the browser's address
window. You see the URL change from an HTTP
address to an FTP address. This integration of transfer
protocols in today's software is one of the many features
that help to streamline and simplify the Internet experi-
ence.
Uploading on the Internet
If you are uploading a file on the Internet, you are
transmitting the file from your computer to a server
somewhere on the Web. If you are going to be running
your own web site or if you are going to be trading
shareware files with other users, you will need to learn
how to upload.
Uploading on the Internet is always done with an FTP
client. Many FTP clients make uploading and down-
loading as easy as dragging a file from one location to
another with your mouse. Even the most basic FTP
clients have all of the features you will need to access
an FTP server. FTP client software is usually free or
inexpensive, depending on the application's features.
