  • Page 11 How the Electric Vehicle Works Instead of using gasoline to power an internal combustion engine, your vehicle uses stored electricity to power an electric propulsion motor. When decelerating, or going down hills, the electric propulsion motor also acts as a generator to recover a portion of the electrical energy that was used to accelerate the vehicle.
