Setting Depth Stop

The depth stop (see Figure 27) limits the down-
ward movement of the cutting tool when drilling or
tapping the same size hole in multiple workpieces.
The depth-stop adjustment knob is used to posi-
tion the depth stop for holes up to 3" deep.
A pointer attached to the depth stop is provided in
front of the depth scale to help you set the approx-
imate hole depth, but the scale depth can only be
relied on if the spindle height is first positioned so
the bottom of the drill or tap is just above the top
of the workpiece.
Note: The depth scale functions as a general
guide only.

To set depth stop:
1.
DISCONNECT MACHINE FROM POWER!
2.
Install tooling into chuck, then make sure
spindle is completely raised into headstock.
3.
Place thin piece of sheet stock or other mate-
rial over workpiece. This will be used as a
calibration tool in next step.
4.
Unlock headstock elevation lock levers and
use headstock elevation crank to position
cutting tool until it lightly touches sheet
stock (or other material) used in previous
step. Remove sheet stock and retighten lock
levers.
5.
Adjust depth-stop pointer to "0" mark on scale
to calibrate it to workpiece, then remove
sheet stock and tighten headstock elevation
lock levers.
6.
Rotate depth-stop adjustment knob until
depth-stop pointer reaches desired drilling
depth as indicated by scale.
