OVERHAUL
Install a replacement rear bearing s n a p ring (59)
on the mainshaft. Lift the mainshaft slightly and
seat the s n a p ring in its groove.
Install a replacement s e a l in the extension
housing (62) with tool J 33843.

Install and tighten the drain plug (65) plug to
47 N-m (35 ft-lbs) torque.
Install the vacuum switch (8) and replacement
switch gasket (9). Tighten the switch to 27 N-m
torque.
Fill the transfer c a s e with 2.1 liters (4.5 pints) of
J e e p automatic transmission fluid or equivalent
marked D e x r o n ® II.
Install and tighten the fill plug (64) to 47 N-m
(35 ft-lbs) torque.
N O T E : Adjust the transfer c a s e shift linkage and
top off the fluid level after installing the transfer
c a s e .
Apply a 3mm (1/8-in.) bead of Loctite 515, or
e q u i v a l e n t , to the s e a l i n g s u r f a c e of the
extension housing. T h e n align and install the
h o u s i n g on the rear retainer. Tighten the
extension housing bolts to 30 N-m (22 ft-lbs)
torque.
Install the front yoke. Install a replacement seal
washer and retaining nut on the yoke. Tighten
the yoke nut to 149 N-m (110 ft-lbs) torque.
