To connect a passive subwoofer to the Onkyo TX-NR616, you need an external amplifier. The subwoofer output on the TX-NR616 uses an RCA connection, which is designed for powered (active) subwoofers. Since a passive subwoofer lacks an internal amplifier, follow these steps:
1. Connect the Receiver to an External Amplifier - Use an RCA cable to connect the "Sub Out" port on the TX-NR616 to the input of an external amplifier.
2. Connect the External Amplifier to the Passive Subwoofer - Use speaker wires to connect the amplifier’s speaker output to the subwoofer’s terminals.
3. Configure the Receiver Settings - Access the TX-NR616 setup menu and ensure the subwoofer output is enabled. - Adjust crossover and volume settings as needed.
This setup ensures the passive subwoofer receives sufficient power for proper operation.

Need help?
Do you have a question about the TX-NR616 and is the answer not in the manual?
Questions and answers
Kako spojiti pasivni woofer na 7-kanalno pojačalo NR 616
To connect a passive subwoofer to the Onkyo TX-NR616, you need an external amplifier. The subwoofer output on the TX-NR616 uses an RCA connection, which is designed for powered (active) subwoofers. Since a passive subwoofer lacks an internal amplifier, follow these steps:
1. Connect the Receiver to an External Amplifier
- Use an RCA cable to connect the "Sub Out" port on the TX-NR616 to the input of an external amplifier.
2. Connect the External Amplifier to the Passive Subwoofer
- Use speaker wires to connect the amplifier’s speaker output to the subwoofer’s terminals.
3. Configure the Receiver Settings
- Access the TX-NR616 setup menu and ensure the subwoofer output is enabled.
- Adjust crossover and volume settings as needed.
This setup ensures the passive subwoofer receives sufficient power for proper operation.
