The image may be black if the unit is lying on a table or any flat surface. Lift
your magnifier to see whether this is the reason why your screen is black. If
this does not solve the problem, restart the device.

This is normal behavior that is intended to preserve the battery life. By default,

default auto-off timer to 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes or Never.
Colors are difficult to detect
Be certain that there is sufficient ambient light around the device.
Choose a different color combination by pressing the Contrast button while
in magnifier mode.
Screen glare
Certain objects and reading materials are made with reflective surfaces.
Common examples include compact disc jewel cases, varnished book
covers, varnished prints, ID cards / credit cards with glossy surfaces, mobile
phone screens (Gorilla glass) and plasticized items such as drivers' licences.
When using these materials, tilt them in different directions under the reader
to reduce glare. Another option, whenever possible, is turning off the reader
lights by pressing and holding Zoom+ and Zoom- simultaneously.
Another option is to try different contrast modes by clicking the orange
Contrast button at the bottom, center of the device.
