My Optio E-10 shuts itself off after a few seconds. What would cause this?

The Pentax Optio E10 shuts itself off after a few seconds because it incorrectly reads the voltage of the batteries. Even with fully charged AA alkaline batteries measuring 1.5 volts each, the camera indicates that the battery is almost dead. This issue causes the camera to either shut off immediately or fail to turn on at all.
