  • Page 22: Air Compressor Package

AIR COMPRESSOR PACKAGE The air compressor package consists of a rotary screw compressor unit, air-cooled lubrication and cooling system, discharge system, intake and capacity control system and monitoring system. This compressor package is part of the SP-series. The heart of the package is equipped with the new line of SP compressor units which are robust in design for long life in numerous applications.
  • Page 23: Protective Devices

PROTECTIVE DEVICES The compressor package is equipped with several safety devices to protect the equipment and the end user. A pressure relief valve is mounted on the sump tank to prevent the compressor package from exceed- ing the rated pressure of its components. A temperature sensor and pressure transducers will send a signal to the microprocessor to shut the compressor down if temperature or pressure limits are exceeded 3.4.1 RECEIVER PRESSURE SENSOR (P1)
  • Page 24: Cooling And Lubricating System

It is a sealant, sealing the rotors to reduce leakage paths between the rotors and between the stator housing. Rotary screw compressor units require specialized lubricant to maintain proper performance. Use of Sullivan-Palatek lubricants is recommended. Refer to 8.4 Compressor Lubricants. 3.6.2 TEMPERATURE CONTROL VALVE (THERMOSTATIC VALVE) The temperature control valve (also referred to as a thermostatic valve) regulates the flow of oil to the oil cooler based on temperature.
  • Page 25: Air Inlet And Capacity Control System

3.6.3 FLUID (OIL) COOLER The fluid (oil) cooler is a two-pass, finned aluminum tube design. The fluid (oil) cooler allows transfer of heat from the oil through the tube wall and into the fins. The heat is then removed by the airflow from the electric-driven cooling fan.
  • Page 26 START-UP LEGEND Line Pressure Dry Side Regulated Air FIGURE 3-4. SP20-MPC CONTROL SYSTEM (START-UP) R00 When the compressor is started, a 20-second timer is energized to ensure the compressor is up to proper speed and minimum design pressure has been achieved. At this time the system in blow-down status, 04/17/14 during which control air is supplied back to the inlet valve to keep it in a closed position and a controlled amount of air is vented out of the sump tank.
  • Page 27 FULL-LOAD LEGEND Line Pressure Dry Side Regulated Air FIGURE 3-6. SP20-MPC CONTROL SYSTEM (FULL-LOAD) R00 After the initial start-up, the timer will force the electrical components controlling the low pressure control to drop out. This will shut off the blow-down circuit, allowing the sump pressure to come up to operating pressure.
  • Page 28 MODULATION LEGEND Line Pressure Dry Side Regulated Air FIGURE 3-8. SP20-MPC CONTROL SYSTEM (MODULATION) R00 Modulation will occur between the regulated set point and the setting of the microprocessor, which should be 10 psi (0.7 bar) over regulated set pressure to create a 10 psi (0.7 bar) modulating range. When the 04/17/14 line pressure satisfies the customer’s demand set pressure, the control regulating valve will sense the demand change and start supplying air to the inlet poppet valve, closing the disc to the desired posi-...
  • Page 29 UNLOAD LEGEND Line Pressure Dry Side Regulated Air FIGURE 3-10. SP20-MPC CONTROL SYSTEM (UNLOAD) R00 Unload status occurs when the customer’s demand pressure set point is achieved with an additional 10 psi (0.7 bar) overshoot. The inlet valve is completely closed at this time, with a predetermined amount of by-pass inlet air being supplied to the unit.
  • Page 30: Monitoring System

3.7.2 INLET CONTROL VALVE The inlet control valve is the main control for air capacity within the air compressor. It is equipped with a poppet disc for inlet control as well as reverse flow check. The valve is initially opened at start-up by suction created by rotating screws in the compressor unit.

  • Page 32: Receiving

RECEIVING Every Sullivan-Palatek air compressor has been operated and tested at the factory prior to shipment. The testing ensures that the air compressor is functioning properly will deliver its rated capacity. Regardless of the care taken at the factory, there is a possibility that the air compressor will be damaged during ship- ment.
  • Page 33: Electrical Connections

The recommended water pressure range is 40–75 psig (2.8–5.2 bar). Refer to 2 SPECIFICATIONS for cooling water flow rates. Water flow rates will vary by operat- ing condtions. Consult the nearest Sullivan-Palatek representative for flow rates based on criteria other than what is listed.
  • Page 34: Compressed Air System

After the electrical installation has been completed, it is necessary to check the motor rotation. To check the rotation,This will start the motor briefly to observe the rotation. The rotation of the drive coupling should match the rotation indicated by the rotation decal located on the compressor. If the rotation is incorrect, cut off power to the compressor and reverse any two of the three incoming leads L1, L2 or L3.
