OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE HORIZON
OPERATION
When first beginning a session with the HORIZON computer, first
check each of the following:
I•. Be sure the computer and terminal are plugged into the AC
outlet and are known to have been left in a condition ready
for use.
B. Check that the terminal cable is properly connected to the
terminal and to the HORIZON standard serial interface
connector on the backpanel.
See the HORIZON Grounding
section to be sure the terminal is grounded correctly.
':. Check that the HORIZON and terminal are configured for the
same baud rate and RS-232 or current-loop operation.
The
terminal must be in full-duplex operation mode.
DOS, BASIC,
and the Monitor use upper-case ASCII characters.
SeLect a diskette containing a version of the North Star DOS
peJ:snnalized for your I/O configuration (the standard HORIZON
di3kette is configured for use with the standard serial I/O
in:erface).
The DOS must be the first file on the diskette,
st.rting at disk address 4.
In;ert the diskette into drive #1 (the left hand drive mounted to
th~
front panel in a two drive system).
Orient the diskette so
th.t the write protect notch is up and the label faces to the
riJht.
Make sure the diskette is resting gently against the back
stJp, and then close the drive latch.
If power is not already on (check the power LED on the front
panel), then turn on the power switch.
Otherwise, toggle the
reset switch.
Both switches are located on the back panel near
the fan.
Disk drive #1 should turn on momentarily and the
terminal should print a plus sign (+)
to indicate that the DOS is
loaded and awaiting a command.
Any DOS command may now be typed
(e.g., GO BASIC).
Refer to the North Star System Software Manual for complete
details of the use of the North Star software.
DISKETTES
During the course of a lengthy session with the HORIZON, if
a~,ditions
or modifications are made to any program or data file,
it is recommended that the user periodically make a "back-up"
copy of the file either on a loaded diskette or, preferably, on
an extra diskette.
