I have a PMD420 that hasn't been used for three or four years. With new batteries, it runs, moving the tape slowly for play and quickly forward and backward on rewind. However, it does not play any sound. What are the possible reasons why this unit is silent?

Possible reasons for no sound from a Marantz PMD420 after several years of inactivity include:
1. Dirty or Magnetized Tape Heads – Tape heads and guides may accumulate dirt or become magnetized over time, affecting playback. Cleaning with denatured alcohol or a commercial head cleaning solution and periodic demagnetization can help. 2. Speaker Switch Off – If the internal speaker is turned off using the SPKR MON switch, no sound will be heard. 3. Electrical Issues – Long periods of inactivity may cause electrical components to degrade, leading to issues with power or audio circuits. 4. Faulty Connections – Loose or corroded connections in the audio output or power supply can disrupt sound. 5. Tape Mechanism Issues – Mechanical parts, such as belts or rollers, may degrade or seize, preventing proper playback.
If the issue persists, servicing by a qualified technician is recommended.
