Unlike protec ve relays, compu ng pla orms need to have the opera ng system safely shut down before
removing power. This shutdown will increase the reliability of your computing pla orm. Computing
pla orms with the enhanced write filter (EWF) need to have any changes saved before powering the system
down or those changes will not be preserved.

ASELINE
SEL uses a Na onal Ins tute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guide
(h p://csrc.nist.gov/itsec/guidance_WinXP.html) in securing Microso ® Windows® XP-based computing
pla orms. Most guides recommend disabling ports and services that are not in use. Consider a benchma rk
such as the Center for Internet Security (h p://benchmarks.cisecurity.org) when crea ng your own security
baseline. Use your baseline to assess computing pla orm changes and measure risk. Consider using the
items below as part of your baseline.

ALWARE
SEL computing pla orms are malware free from the factory, but will not stay that way without proper
precau ons. An virus and whitelis ng applica ons help prevent infec ons. An virus applica ons, while
rela vely easy to set up, require frequent updates. Whitelis ng applica ons must be carefully configured ,
but require fewer updates and have li le impact on performance.

OINTS
USB and network shares increase your risk of malware infec ons and data leakage. To minimize risk, be
careful about what you plug into your computing pla orm. If you must use USB or network shares, then
define a safe process for USB and network share use.

IREWALL
On most computing pla orms the firewall is enabled by default. This is the preferred se ng and provides
another layer of security for your computing pla orm. Ensure that the firewall is enabled, and minimize the
number and scope of excep ons.
