Engine M159

The SLS AMG is fitted with the new AMG 6.3-liter V8
gasoline engine (M 159). It is based on the familiar
AMG M 156 engine with the following new features:
• New engine supports
• New engine wiring harness
• New plastic cylinder head covers with bleed line
and without oil filler cap
• New vehicle-mounted air filter boxes
• New large-displacement intake system
• New alternator
• New refrigerant compressor
• New belt arrangement
• Two-mass flywheel with starter ring gear
• Dry sump lubrication with separate oil tank and oil
level sensor
New V8 gasoline engine M 159 with 6.3-liter displacement and 420 kW output

• One external oil pressure pump on the left and two
external oil suction pumps on the right of the
engine crankcase with new chain drive and two oil
pressure sensors for controlling the oil pressure
pump
• New forged pistons
• Reduced weight all-aluminum crankcase
• Improved crankcase structure
• Modified valve timing gear and camshafts
• Flow-optimized fan-type exhaust pipe
• Specially tuned exhaust system
• New cover for engine and oil tank
A range of new features have made it possible to, for
example, significantly improve the cylinder charge.
Compared to the M 156, the new V8 gasoline engine
responds even more sensitively to accelerator pedal
movements and demonstrates much improved flexi-
bility throughout the entire rpm range.
