    If you believe that your vehicle has a defect which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in addition to notifying Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign.

    Getting started Unlocking The “Getting started” section provides an overview of the vehicle’s most basic func- tions.     Enter the vehicle and insert the SmartKey in the starter switch. Opening a door causes its window to open slightly. It will fully close when the door is shut. A side window will not work if it is blocked with ice or if the battery needs charging. If you cannot shut a door, do not force it or you could damage the door or the side window.
  • Page 39 Getting started Unlocking When you switch on ignition, the indicator and warning lamps (except high beam headlamp indicator lamp and turn signal indicator lamps unless activated) in the instrument cluster come on. The indicator and warning lamps (except high beam headlamp indicator lamp and turn signal indicator lamps if activated) will go out when the engine is running.

    Adjusting Warning! All seat, head restraint, steering wheel, and rear view mirror adjustments, as well as fas- tening of seat belts, must be done before the vehicle is put into motion. Seats The seats can be adjusted either manually or electrically, depending on the vehicle’s equipment.
  • Page 41 Getting started Adjusting Warning! When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Even with the SmartKey removed from the starter switch, the power seats* can be op- erated when the respective door is open. Therefore, do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle.

    Steering wheel Warning! Do not adjust the steering wheel while driv- ing. Adjusting the steering wheel while driv- ing, or driving without the steering wheel adjustment feature locked could cause the driver to lose control of the vehicle. When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle.

    Getting started Adjusting Warning! Let the system complete the adjustment procedure before setting the vehicle in mo- tion. All steering wheel adjustment must be completed before setting the vehicle in mo- tion. Driving off with the steering wheel still adjusting could cause the driver to lose con- trol of the vehicle.

    Getting started Driving Warning! Make sure that absolutely no objects are ob- structing the pedal’s range of movement. Keep the driver’s footwell clear of all obsta- cles. If there are any floormats or carpets in the footwell, make sure the pedals still have sufficient clearance.
  • Page 50 Warning! Never let more people ride in the vehicle than there are seat belts available. Be sure everyone riding in the vehicle is correctly restrained with a separate seat belt. Never use a seat belt for more than one person at a time.
  • Page 51 Do not bleach or dye seat belts as this may severely weaken them. In a crash, they may not be able to provide adequate protection. Damaged seat belts or seat belts that were highly stressed in an accident must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

    Starting the engine Warning! Inhalation of exhaust gas is hazardous to your health. All exhaust gas contains carbon monoxide (CO), and inhaling it can cause un- consciousness and possible death. Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated.
  • Page 53 Get a jump start ( page 426). If the engine does not start after several starting attempts, there could be a mal- function in the engine electronics or in the fuel supply system. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center or call Roadside Assistance.

    Parking brake Warning! When leaving the vehicle, always remove the SmartKey from the starter switch, take it with you, and lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked vehicle. Children could release the parking brake, which could result in an accident and/or serious personal injury.
  • Page 55 Getting started Driving Once the vehicle is in motion, the automatic central locking system engages and the locking knobs drop down. The automatic door lock feature can be deacti- vated ( page 146). You can open a locked door from the inside.     Unburned gasoline may have entered the catalytic converter and damaged it. Give very little gas. Have the problem repaired by an au- thorized Mercedes-Benz Center as soon as possible. The coolant temperature is above 248°F (120°C) The coolant is too hot and is no longer cooling the engine.

    Parking and locking You have now completed your first drive. You have properly stopped and parked your vehicle. End your drive as follows. Warning! Vehicles with manual transmission: Wait until the vehicle is stationary before re- moving the SmartKey from the starter switch.

    This can damage the seat belt and impair the effectiveness of the seat belt, and/or cause damage to the door and/or door trim panel. Such damage is not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. Damaged seat belts must be replaced. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center.

If the 75 indicator lamp is not illuminated, the passenger front air bag is activated and will be deployed: in the event of certain frontal impacts if impact exceeds a preset deployment threshold independently of the head-thorax air...
  • Page 75 Safety and Security Occupant safety If you place a child in a forward-facing child restraint on the passenger seat, move the seat as far back as possible, use the proper child restraint recom- mended for the age, size and weight of the child, and secure child restraint with the vehicle’s seat belt according to the child seat manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Page 76 If the 75 indicator lamp should not illuminate, the system is not functioning. You must contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center before seating any child on the passenger seat. More information can be found in the “Practical hints” section ( page 358).

    Safety and Security Occupant safety Seat belts The use of seat belts and infant and child restraint systems is required by law in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories and all Canadian provinces. Even where this is not the case, all vehicle occupants should have their seat belts fastened whenever the vehicle is in motion.
  • Page 78 Only use seat belts which have been approved by Mercedes-Benz. Do not make any modifications to the seat belts. This can lead to unintended activation of the ETDs or to their failure to activate when necessary.
  • Page 79 Safety and Security Occupant safety Seat belts should not be worn twisted. In a crash, you would not have the full width of the seat belt to manage impact forces. The twisted seat belt against your body could cause injuries. Pregnant women should also always use a lap-shoulder belt.

The child restraint system’s metal parts, for example, could become very hot, and the child could be burned on these parts. If children open a door, they could injure other persons get out of the car and injure themselves or be injured by following traffic...
  • Page 82 A statement by the child restraint manu- facturer of compliance with these stan- dards can be found on the instruction label on the restraint and in the instruction manual provided with the restraint. When using any infant, or toddler restraint, or booster seat, be sure to carefully read and follow all manufacturer’s instructions for installation and use.

    Add premixed coolant solution only. Adding water and MB 325.0 Anticorrosion/Antifreeze separately from each other, could cause engine damage not covered by the Mercedes-Benz Limited Warranty. If the antifreeze mixture is effective to -35°F (-37°C), the boiling point of the cool- ant in the pressurized cooling system is reached at approximately 266°F (130°C).
