X86 and AMD64/EM64T UP Kernel May Fail to Install, Boot, or Start X
when FX4500 Graphics Card is Present
DESCRIPTION
If your system meets all of the criteria listed in the "scope" section below, the UP kernel may fail to
install, to boot property, or to start X.
SCOPE
HP xw8400 Workstation with the following present:
NVidia FX4500 graphics card
SAS controller and SAS disk drive
UP kernel and unaccelerated vesa graphics drive configured
RESOLUTION
HP recommends one of the following
If the install results in fatal errors installing packages or formatting, then re-start the install using

text mode:
Start your install as you usually would.
a.
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux install boot prompt "boot:_" displays.
b.
At the prompt, type "linux text".
c.
Continue with your install as usual.
d.
After the install, the SMP kernel is booted by default – if you need to boot the UP kernel instead

then ensure that you have the accelerated graphics driver installed.
Boot to the default kernel (SMP) and run
a.
# glxinfo | grep "direct rendering"
If this returns "direct rendering: Yes", then you have the accelerated graphics
b.
driver installed and you should be able to boot the UP kernel and start X.
If it returns "direct rendering" No", then you will need to download and configure
c.
the accelerated NVidia graphics driver.
i. Go to http://www.hp.com/go/workstationsupport to download NVIDIA
ii. Install the NVIDIA driver downloaded from the HP Workstation support
