Field Descriptions
The DHCP panel displays the following fields:
Enable DHCP on inside interface—Select this check box to turn on DHCP for the PIX Firewall.
DHCP Address Pool
IP Address Range—Enter the range of the DHCP server pool in a block of IP addresses from the
lowest to highest. For example: 10.0.1.101–10.0.1.110. The block of addresses must be on the same
subnet as the inside interface. The PIX 506 can support up to 32 DHCP-assigned IP addresses in
version 6.0; all larger PIX Firewall platforms can support 254 IP addresses.
Lease Length (seconds)—Enter the amount of time (in seconds) the client can use its allocated
before the lease expires. The default value is 3600 seconds (1 hour).
Ping Timeout (milliseconds)—Enter the number of milliseconds the PIX Firewall should wait before
declaring timeout on a ping. To verify the status of its DHCP leases, the PIX Firewall uses Ping to
dynamically determine if an IP address is still in use by a client.
Enable autoconfiguration—Instructs the DHCP server to configure the domain name, DNS, and WINS
information.
Note: If your PIX Firewall is also acting as a DHCP client on the outside interface, you can enable
autoconfiguration to allow the PIX Firewall to automatically pass the dns, wins and domain_name parameters it
gets from the outside interface (as a DHCP client) to hosts in its inside network. Alternately, you can manually
specify the dns, wins and domain_name parameters. If you manually specified those parameters and
autoconfiguration is on, your values take precedence.
Domain name—(Optional) Enter a valid
example.com).
DNS—Enables up to two DNS servers for the DHCP client.
Server 1 and Server 2—Enter one or both IP addresses for the DNS server(s).
