file Any named, ordered collection of information
stored on a disk.
firmware Programs stored permanently in read-
only memory (ROM). Such programs are built into
the printer at the factory. They can be executed at
any time, but cannot be modified or erased from
memory.
font A set of characters of a specific orientation
(portrait/landscape), symbol set, spacing pitch,
point size, style, stroke weight, and typeface.
furnish Elements of fiber composition and
chemical composition that make up paper. Furnish
can also include how fiber pulp is manufactured.
fuser rollers The fuser rollers are rollers inside
the SuperScript 1260 that fuse toner to paper.
fusing capability The way in which media used
in the printer reacts when exposed to the fuser's
temperature of 392˚F (200˚C) for 0.1 seconds.
Media should not discolor melt, offset material,
release hazardous emissions, or break down in any
way.
GDI Abbreviation of Graphical Device Interface.
This is a library of core functions in Windows that
processes graphical data for display and printing.
grain The position of the paper fibers. During the
manufacturing process, most fibers are oriented
with their length running parallel to the long
dimension of the cut sheet. Once manufactured,
paper can be cut into sheets with the grain running
either parallel to the long dimension of the paper
(long grain) or perpendicular to the long
dimension (short grain).
These characteristics ("Long" or "Short") are
usually specified on the paper package. The
dimensions listed on a paper ream list the long
grain dimension last. If short grain is specified on
a ream of letter-size paper, the size reads 11 in. by
8 1/2 in.
graphic An image that graphically represents an
object, concept, or message.
gray scale A setting you use to select the best
halftone pattern for the graphics in your document,
based on whether it contains photo images, line
art, or scanned images.
halftone The reproduction of an image using dots
of varying sizes in a grid pattern.
hot-key A combination of keys on your computer
keyboard that you press at the same time to
execute a command or launch an application.
icon An image that graphically represents an
object, concept, or message.
