Congratulations on your purchase of the Prestige 2602R Series ADSL VoIP IAD. Models in the series ending in “1”, for example Prestige 2602R-61, denote a device that works over the analog telephone system, POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). Models ending in “3” denote a device that works over ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network).
  • Page 31 • For brevity’s sake, we will use “e.g.,” as a shorthand for “for instance”, and “i.e.,” for “that is” or “in other words” throughout this manual. • The Prestige 2602R series may be referred to as the Prestige in this user’s guide. This refers to both models (ADSL over POTS and ADSL over ISDN) unless specifically identified.

  • Page 51: Dns Server Address Assignment

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide There are two ways that an ISP disseminates the DNS server addresses. The first is for an ISP to tell a customer the DNS server addresses, usually in the form of an information sheet, when s/he signs up.

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide 5.2 Metric The metric represents the "cost of transmission". A router determines the best route for transmission by choosing a path with the lowest "cost". Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide By implementing PPPoE directly on the Prestige (rather than individual computers), the computers on the LAN do not need PPPoE software installed, since the Prestige does that part of the task. Furthermore, with NAT, all of the LANs’ computers will have access.

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide H A P T E R Network Address Translation (NAT) Screens 6.1 NAT Overview NAT (Network Address Translation - NAT, RFC 1631) is the translation of the IP address of a host in a packet, for example, the source address of an outgoing packet, used within one network to a different IP address known within another network.
  • Page 75: What Nat Does

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide 6.1.2 What NAT Does In the simplest form, NAT changes the source IP address in a packet received from a subscriber (the inside local address) to another (the inside global address) before forwarding the packet to the WAN side. When the response comes back, NAT translates the destination address (the inside global address) back to the inside local address before forwarding it to the original inside host.
  • Page 76: Nat Application

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide Figure 21 How NAT Works 6.1.4 NAT Application The following figure illustrates a possible NAT application, where three inside LANs (logical LANs using IP Alias) behind the Prestige can communicate with three distinct WAN networks. More examples follow at the end of this chapter.
  • Page 77: Sua (Single User Account) Versus Nat

    • Many to One: In Many-to-One mode, the Prestige maps multiple local IP addresses to one global IP address. This is equivalent to SUA (for instance, PAT, port address translation), ZyXEL’s Single User Account feature that previous ZyXEL routers supported (the SUA Only option in today’s routers).
  • Page 78: Sua Server

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide 6.3 SUA Server A SUA server set is a list of inside (behind NAT on the LAN) servers, for example, web or FTP, that you can make visible to the outside world even though SUA makes your whole inside network appear as a single computer to the outside world.

If there are any empty rules before your new configured rule, your configured rule will be pushed up by that number of empty rules.

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide H A P T E R Introduction to VoIP This chapter provides background information on VoIP and SIP. 7.1 Introduction to VoIP VoIP is the sending of voice signals over the Internet Protocol. This allows you to make phone calls and send faxes over the Internet at a fraction of the cost of using the traditional circuit- switched telephone network.

In the following figure, either A or B can act as a SIP user agent client to initiate a call.

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide Figure 29 SIP Proxy Server 7.2.3.3 SIP Redirect Server A SIP redirect server accepts SIP requests, translates the destination address to an IP address and sends the translated IP address back to the device that sent the request. Then the client device that originally sent the request can send requests to the IP address that it received back from the redirect server.

When a VoIP device behind the Prestige registers with the SIP register server, the Prestige translates the device’s private IP address inside the SIP data stream to a public IP address. The router that delivers the data packet to the correct destination host uses the host ID. IP Classes An IP address is made up of four octets (eight bits), written in dotted decimal notation, for example, 192.168.1.1.
  • Page 293: Subnet Masks

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide Note: Host IDs of all zeros or all ones are not allowed. Therefore: A class “C” network (8 host bits) can have 2 –2 or 254 hosts. A class “B” address (16 host bits) can have 2 –2 or 65534 hosts.
  • Page 294: Subnetting

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide Subnetting With subnetting, the class arrangement of an IP address is ignored. For example, a class C address no longer has to have 24 bits of network number and 8 bits of host ID. With subnetting, some of the host ID bits are converted into network number bits.
  • Page 295: Table 89 Subnet 1

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide The first three octets of the address make up the network number (class “C”). You want to have two separate networks. Divide the network 192.168.1.0 into two separate subnets by converting one of the host ID bits of the IP address to a network number bit.
  • Page 296: Example: Four Subnets

Prestige 2602R Series User’s Guide 192.168.1.0 with mask 255.255.255.128 is the subnet itself, and 192.168.1.127 with mask 255.255.255.128 is the directed broadcast address for the first subnet. Therefore, the lowest IP address that can be assigned to an actual host for the first subnet is 192.168.1.1 and the highest is 192.168.1.126.
