Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series Spotlight
Unified Communications
The Catalyst 4500 offers a broad selection of
Classic and E-Series PoE line cards and power
supplies for high density PoE applications. Support
includes IEEE 802.3af Class 3 (15.4W) PoE devices
and 20watts for 802. 1 1n wireless access points.
The E-Series is also the first switch in the industry
to support up to 30 watts PoE for devices requiring
high power.
To optimize traffic over a Unified network, the
Catalyst 4500 offers extensive QoS features,
including L2-L7 classification, policing, traffic
shaping, and advanced congestion control with
port level user configurable TX queues, ensuring
timely delivery of real time voice video and data
applications. The Catalyst 4500 offers predictable
wire rate performance even with extensive QoS
and security features enabled.
Resiliency
The Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series is optimized for
high resiliency to minimize planned and unplanned
user downtime. It supports redundancy in both
hardware and software to deliver a highly available
switch for unified networks. The Catalyst 4500
offers redundancy for all critical components in the
switch including the supervisor, power supplies
and fans, ensuring the highest levels of resiliency.
Software features enable millisecond failover
ensuring that connectivity is not lost including
IP phone calls or live Video streams. In Service
Software Upgrade (ISSU) allows customers to
upgrade the entire IOS image without taking the
switch down and seamless to users.
Scalability
With support for up to 384 10/100/1000 ports,
and 30Watts of PoE plus compatible, the modular
architecture of the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series
provides the scalability and flexibility to eliminate
the need for multiplatform deployments and
minimizes expenses. The Cisco Catalyst 4500
Series offers up to 320gig of capacity and 250
million packets per second (Mpps) wire-speed
forwarding rate in hardware. Switching performance
is independent of the number of route entries or
advanced Layer 3 services enabled. This ensures
exceptional performance for applications which are
jitter and latency sensitive.
Investment Protection
The Catalyst 4500 Series offers unprecedented
backward and forward compatibility delivering
exceptional investment protection. The new 4500-
E Series chassis supports all shipping classic
supervisors, line cards and power supplies.
The new Supervisor 6-E is also designed with
backward compatibility to support classic line
cards and the high performance E-Series line
cards in the same chassis with each line card
operating at it's maximum speed. This level of
backward compatibility allows customer to reuse
a significant portion of their current Catalyst 4500
investment while taking advantage of the added
features of the E-Series.
