  • Page 11: Cisco Ata 190 Analog Telephone Adapter Overview

The ATA 190 analog telephone adapters are handset-to-Ethernet adapters that allow regular analog phones to operate on IP-based telephony networks. The ATA 190 support two voice ports, each with an independent phone number. The ATA 190 also has an RJ-45 10/100BASE-T data port.
  • Page 12: Session Initiation Protocol Overview

SIP is a peer-to-peer protocol. The peers in a session are called User Agents (UAs). A user agent can function in one of these roles: User agent client (UAC)—A client application that initiates the SIP request. • Cisco ATA 190 Analog Telephone Adapter Administration Guide for SIP (Version 1.1) OL-31821-02...

The ATA 190 has one network port—An RJ-45 10/100BASE-T data port to connect an • Ethernet-capable device, such as a computer, to the network. The ATA 190 network port performs autonegotiation for duplex and speed. It supports speed of Note 10/100 Mbps and full-duplex.

Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol Secure Real-Time Transport Protocol secures voice conversations on the network and provides protection against replay attacks. Currently, ATA 190 does not support secure conference call. A 2-way secure call is supported. Note Fax Passthrough Name Signaling Event (NSE) -based and re-INVITE-based passthrough are simply transport of fax communications using the G.711a/u codec.

Understanding Interactions with Other Cisco Unified IP Communications Products To function in the IP telephony network, the ATA 190 must be connected to a networking device, such as a Cisco Catalyst switch. You must also register the ATA 190 with a Cisco Unified Communications Manager system before sending and receiving calls.
  • Page 22: Understanding Ata 190 Interaction With Cisco Unified Communications Manager

Cisco Unified Communications Manager software sets up and tears down calls between analog phones that are connected to the ATA 190, and thus integrates traditional PBX functionality with the corporate IP network. Cisco Unified Communications Manager manages the components of the IP telephony system: the phones, the access gateways, and the resources necessary for features such as call conferencing and route planning.
  • Page 23: Understanding Phone Configuration Files

Configuration files also contain information about which image load the ATA 190 should be running. If this image load differs from the one that is currently loaded on an ATA 190, the phone contacts the TFTP server to request the required load files. (These files are digitally signed to ensure the authenticity of the file source.)
