the end gaps are distributed around the piston as
show n in Figure 148. It is imp ort ant that the ring
gaps are not a ligned wit h each other when installed
to prevent compressio n pressures from escaping
pa st them.
5. If insta lling oversize co mp ression rin gs, check
the number to ma ke sure the correct rings are bein g
install ed . Th e ring numbers should be the same as
the piston oversiz e number.
6. If new part s we re insta lled, the engi ne should be
broken in the same as a new one . Refer to
Engine

The ca ms haft is d riven by a chain located in a
cavity in the right s ide of the engine.

The original chain is a continuously
closed loop without a master link. To
prevent chain f ailure, do

Removal
I. Rem ove the cy linder head cover and rocker arm
asse mbly as described in this chapter,
2. Remove the ca mshaft as described in this chapter.
3. Rem o ve thc recoil starte r asse mbly as desc ribed
in Chapte r Five.
4 . Remo ve the flywh eel and the alte rnator stator
plate as de scribed in Chapter Five.
5. Remove the bo lt (Fig u re 149) securing the cam-
shaft cha in rear tcnsioncr slide r. Remove the slider
out thorough the top ofthe cha in tunne l in the ey lin-
dcr b lock and cy linder head.
6. Remove the driven sprocket from the chai n.
7. Parti all y lower the camshaft chain (A, Figure
150) throu gh the chain tun ne l in the cy linder head
and cy linder block .
8. Disenga ge the cams haft chain from the dri ve
sproc ket (8, Figure 150) and cra nks haft, then re-
move the cha in.
9. If sti ll in place , remove the nut and washer (C,
F igure 150) from the end of the cran kshaft ,
