Testing the Bridge and LANs

A bridge or LAN fault during normal operation will usually be indicated by the Fault and Net
Fail LEDs (see table 5-2). To verify such an indication, or to investigate intermittent
indications that your LANs do not appear to be communicating properly across the bridge, the
fault can usually be isolated to either the bridge or the attached networks by executing a bridge
reset. During the reset process, the bridge executes an internal self-test to check its own
functions, and an external loopback test to verify that the attached LANs are properly
terminated and operational.
For the external loopback, the bridge sends packets addressed to itself out on both LAN ports.
The external loopback test fails if the packets are not returned to the bridge. The Net Fail LED
will turn ON for the port that did not receive the packet and the Fault LEDs on the front and
back of the bridge will turn ON.
Execute these tests by resetting the bridge with either the bridge console Reset command or by
pressing the Reset button on the back of the bridge. See "Resetting the Bridge" in chapter 4,
"Operation".
Any errors encountered during the tests will be reported on the bridge LEDs. See table 5-1 to
interpret the LED pattern when the reset process completes.
