Introduction
The Nortel Norstar product line consists of three models:
The Norstar 3x8 system is the smallest model and provides capacity for three CO lines and
eight stations. The Norstar 3x8 has been around since 1988 and is a very outdated system.
It is still available although not very heavily marketed. It has a limited feature set
compared to the other Norstar models.
The Norstar ICS Compact is similar to the larger Norstar ICS Modular in feature content,
but the KSU hardware is different. The Norstar ICS Compact has built-in capacity for four
lines and eight digital stations, and grows to a maximum capacity of 8 CO lines and 24
stations.
The Norstar ICS Modular is the largest Norstar system, offering modular expansion up to
maximum capacity of 272 ports (must use T1 or PRI to achieve 272 ports). None of the
Norstar equipment is upward compatible with the larger Meridian™ PBX systems.
All Norstar models use the same digital telephones that Nortel has sold since 1988. No other
Nortel telephones are compatible with the Norstar. Norstar telephones are not compatible with
any other Nortel systems.
In addition to the Norstar product line, Nortel also has Meridian PBX systems. Two models
called the Meridian Option 11C and Option 11C Compact are available in line/station sizes
positioned directly above the Norstar.
The Toshiba Strata DK product line consists of three models:
The Strata DK14 system is the smallest model and provides capacity for four CO lines,
eight digital stations, and two analog stations. The Strata DK14 has a very comprehensive
feature set compared to the Norstar 3x8.
The Strata DK40i has similar feature content to the larger DK424, but the KSU hardware
is different. The Strata DK40i provides maximum capacity of 12 CO lines and 28 stations.
The Strata DK424 is Toshiba's largest system, offering modular expansion up to maximum
capacity of 432 ports.
All Strata DK models use the same digital telephones. Previous generations of Toshiba
telephones are also compatible with Strata DK systems, providing excellent investment
protection.
