Transmission distances
The possible transmission range with multimode fibres is essentially limited by two factors:
1st Limit of the bandwidth caused by modal distortion.
It is presumed that a multimode gradient fibre is used whose product bandwidth times
length is greater than 200 MHz × km (typical value for a 62.5/125 µm fibre is 400 to
800 MHz × km, for a 50/125 µm fibre is 400 to 1200 MHz × km). The theoretical limit
of transmission range by the product bandwidth times length results, considering the
method used in the FO-Repeater, in a maximum distance of 10 km.
2nd Fibre attenuation.
The typical attenuation of a 62.5/125 µm gradient fibre using light with λ = 1310 nm is
< 2 dB/km. For reasons of reserve and fibre-splice, and additional margin of 0.5 dB is
adequate. This results in practical calculation with 2.5 dB/km.

With multimode fibre, the light of the
wave length λ = 1310 nm is anticipated with
an optical signal attenuation of 2.5 dB/km.
