    SECTION 1 GETTING ACQUAINTED Printer Default Printing Modes The Printer has three default Printing Modes “Roll-to-Roll”, “Roll-to-Cut”, and “FanFold”. Depending on what is connected or disconnected from the Printer determines what mode the Printer will operate in and disables or enables the automatic function of the Cutter.     SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Choose a Location The Printer should be placed on a sturdy level worktable or cabinet at least 9 inches from any walls. The surface should be large enough to accommodate the Printer, and Unwinder and Winder if used, in a line together.

    SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Installing the Ink Tanks The Printer uses five Ink Tanks (two Black, one Cyan, one Magenta, and one Yellow). The Ink Tank is a delicate, precision device. Handle with extreme care to avoid damage. Ink Tank Anatomy The ink used in this system may be harmful if swallowed.

    SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Procedure (Installing the Ink Tanks): This procedure assumes that you are installing Ink Tanks into a printer that doesn’t have any Ink Tanks installed. If you are replacing an empty Ink Tank, please refer to the “Replacing the Ink Tanks” section. 1.

    SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Install the Printhead Cartridge The Digital Color Printer uses a single Memjet® printhead cartridge. The Printhead Cartridge is a delicate, precision device. Handle with extreme care to avoid damage and issues that could degrade print quality.
  • Page 31 SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER CAUTION! • Use electrostatic discharge (ESD) handling precautions. • Hold the Printhead Cartridge by the handles ONLY. • DO NOT touch the ink couplings, nozzle surface or electrical contacts. • DO NOT unpack the Printhead Cartridge until the Printer is ready for installation.

If the Printhead Latch [1] is closed; press the “Printhead Release” button, located in the “Services” tab of the “MC Series Driver” properties, or the “User Interface” screen of the MC Series “Toolbox” utility. The printer will run a routine and then the Printhead Latch [2] will release so it can be opened.
  • Page 33 SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER 6. Prepare the printhead cartridge. Carefully remove the Printhead Cartridge from the foil vacuum packaging. Tear at notch or cut end with scissors. CAUTION: DO NOT touch the ink couplings, printhead nozzle surface or electrical contacts. [A] Remove the protective plastic cover.
  • Page 34 SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER 1. Carefully insert the Cartridge into the compartment at an angle [1], with the Printhead surface facing down and the Ink Nozzles facing the Ink Hoses. Once it is seated, gently tilt the Cartridge back until it snaps into an upright position [2]. DO NOT FORCE the Cartridge into position. 7.

It will be resistant, but apply consistent pressure and the ink couplings will ease into the ink ports on the printhead. Once latch is closed, the printer will automatically start running a “printhead priming routine”.

As the printer circulates ink and primes the system these fields should all turn black. This may take a few minutes. NOTE: If any Ink Tank is less than 30% full, the Printhead Cartridge priming process may fail (not enough ink to completely fill the system).

    SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Aligning Printer with Unwinder and Winder Roll-to-Roll Label Printing Make sure the Unwinder and Winder are properly connected to the Printer and turned ON, this will disable automatic function of the Cutter. (Cutter can still be operated manually by pressing the CUT/EJECT (CANCEL) Button.
  • Page 39 SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Position the Winder: 1. Align the notch on the Printer Spacer Plate with the corresponding notch on the Winder Base as shown. When aligned, attach Spacer Plate to Winder Base with two screws included. 2. Test Alignment. Run a job. If extreme web drifting is observed or web runs to one side, readjust Winder alignment.

    SECTION 2 INSTALLING THE PRINTER Roll-to-Cut Label Printing Make sure the Unwinder is properly connected to the Printer and turned ON. The Winder should be turned OFF or disconnected to enable automatic operation of the Cutter. Proper alignment of the Unwinder and Printer is critical to operation of the Label Printer.

This will ensure that the automatic cut function of the Cutter is disabled. (Cutter can still be engaged manually by pressing the CUT/EJECT (Cancel) Button.

To speed up the Unwinder and Winder, turn the Speed Controls clockwise.

Set up your job and send it to the Printer. The Printer will start and print. The Printer Driver that you installed on your computer in Section 2 should be set as the default driver.

    SECTION 3 OPERATING THE PRINTER Using the Printer Toolbox Once the Printer Driver is installed you have access to the Printer Toolbox. The Toolbox lets you monitor ink usage, perform diagnostic checks, print reports and run maintenance tasks on the Printer from your computer.

    SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE 3. Carefully Close the Clamshell. CAUTION: To prevent damage, hold onto, then lift and release both latches when closing. If you force it closed without holding the latches open, you will eventually damage the latches and clamshell switch (door switch). Generally, when the ink supply is adequate and the print quality remains poor, or when the automated cleaning processes or manually cleaning the Printhead has not helped the image quality, the Printhead should be replaced.

Release and lift up the two latches at the same time to raise the Printhead Clamshell. Moisten the Printhead nozzles using distilled water and a damp, lint-free cloth, wiping end to end.
  • Page 64 SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Printhead Storage Store and transport the cartridge as indicated by the "this side up" arrow symbol on the packaging. The cartridge and ink supply must be within the operating temperature range before attempting to prime the cartridge with ink and starting to print.
  • Page 65 SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Replacing the Service Station The Service Station is designed provide a long service life. However, should it need to be replaced, follow these steps. The Service Station is located above the Ink Tank Station. 1. Open the Ink Tank Door (hinged at bottom).

NOTE: It is a good idea to place an absorbent towel under the Service Station as you remove it to prevent any drips or leaks.

    SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Replacing the Ink Waste Tray The Ink Waste Tray soaks up any excess ink that may drip from the Print Engine during operation. After a period of time it may become saturated and need replacement. 1. Open Ink Tank Door. 2.

    SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Cleaning WARNING! THE PRINTER IS A PRECISION MACHINE. CLEAN REGULARLY TO INSURE MANY YEARS OF SERVICE. BEFORE PERFORMING ANY MAINTENANCE, DISCONNECT THE MACHINE FROM ITS POWER SOURCE! DO NOT REMOVE SIDE COVERS! HIGH VOLTAGES PRESENT. Clean the Printer regularly to remove accumulated paper dust and ink. Depending on the types of media that are run, paper dust may accumulate inside the Printer and on the Transport.
  • Page 71 SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE [A] Grit Rollers: Clean as needed by moistening a small hard-bristled brush or toothbrush with distilled water. DO NOT use anything other than distilled water to clean the Rollers. [B] Media Sensors: Paper lint and dust may build up on the Media Sensors.

    SECTION 4 MAINTENANCE Shipping or Transporting the Printer If you have to ship or transport the Printer for any reason, the unit will have to be prepared. Once the Printer is prepared, carefully package the Printer, Printhead Cartridge, Service Station and Ink Tanks in their original packaging.

Remove the Printhead Cartridge by tilting it toward the ink lines [2], then carefully lift it out of the Printhead Compartment. 3. Pack the Printhead Cartridge area with absorbent towels to catch any ink drips or spills. Carefully pack the Printhead Cartridge using the original packaging.
