replacing the belt, do
not disassemble the
lower pulley assembly.

Belt Care
1. Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it against
the engine.
2. Drain the fuel tank or place a piece of plastic beneath
the cap to prevent gasoline leakage.
3. Place shift lever in the first position and tip mower on
its side (air cleaner side of engine up).
4. Move height adjustment lever to the highest position.
5. Remove blade, blade adapter, and related hardware
as instructed in Blade Care above. Remove the three
hex screws holding baffle to the deck. See Figure 5-5.
6. Lift baffle towards the rear of the mower. Remove the
hex bolt from the rear of unit holding the transmission
to the mower housing. See Figure 5-6.
7. a. Tilt the transmission forward and loosen the idler
pulley bolt and lock nut half a turn. See Figure 5-7.
b. Using a pair of pliers, pull back and rotate belt
keeper bracket from the slot on the idler pulley.
8. Slide the belt out from between the belt keeper
bracket and the idler pulley. See Figure 5-8.
9. Squeeze the belt together and push it forward, while
pressing the control arm inward towards the deck and
remove six speed cable from the slot. See Figure 5-9.
10. Pivot control arm down away from the pulley and belt.
11. Lift off the lower pulley assembly and remove the old
belt from around the crankshaft.
