Do you have a question about the 2517 and is the answer not in the manual?

We received this machine (Singer Model 2517c) from a friend who only used a few times. I can only get a good stitch with the tension set to 0.5 - 1. This is on cotton quilting fabric. I cannot get a good stitch on lighter weight fabrics. There does not seem to be a removable bobbin case on this machine. What else might I try to adjust?

To improve stitching quality on a Singer Model 2517C when using lighter weight fabrics, consider the following adjustments:

1. Tension Settings: Reduce the upper thread tension to prevent puckering. Lighter fabrics require less tension to form balanced stitches.

2. Presser Foot Pressure: Decrease the presser foot pressure so the fabric feeds smoothly without distortion or stretching.

3. Needle Type and Size: Use a smaller needle, such as size 70/10 or 60/8, and select a needle designed for lightweight fabrics (like a sharp or microtex needle).

4. Thread Type: Use a finer thread, such as 60-weight polyester or cotton, which matches the fabric weight and reduces bulk in the stitches.

5. Stitch Length: Shorten the stitch length to about 1.5–2.0 mm for more precise and secure stitching on thin fabrics.

6. Feed System: Ensure the feed dogs are clean and working correctly to grip and move the fabric evenly.

These adjustments help produce even, smooth stitches and prevent fabric distortion when sewing lightweight materials.
