Product Update: BIOS Update Required With New
Processor Steppings
Situation
A stepping roll is occurring on some Intel Pentium III, Celeron and Pentium 4 processors that are used in HP Servers.
Affected HP Servers and processors are listed in the table below. The new steppings require new versions of BIOS
to function correctly. These new versions are listed in the table below. Failure to install the new BIOS versions
when installing and using these new processors will result in erratic system behavior.
NOTE
The new BIOS versions are backwards compatible with the current CPU steppings. CPU's with
different steppings can be installed together in dual processor systems in either socket.

Solution
Update the system BIOS to the required version using the BIOS update diskette.
1.
If a BIOS update diskette is already available proceed to step 3. If a BIOS update diskette is not available it can be
downloaded from the HP website at: http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/eng/support.htm. Click on the link for
Netservers and then follow the links specific to your server.
2.
After downloading the diskette creation utility, run it with a formatted flexible diskette inserted in the flexible
diskette drive to create the BIOS update disk.
3.
Boot with the flexible diskette in the system and follow the on-screen instructions to update to the new BIOS version
listed in the table above.
NOTE
Updates to products happen frequently; therefore, printed documentation may have information
