7 | Basic health and safety instructions for power tools Note: Failure to read and observe these operating instructions may result in serious injury. As with all machinery, operating a pillar drill can lead to dangerous situations. Careful use and handling can significantly reduce the risk of injury.
g. If dust extractors and collectors can be attached, ensure these are connected and used properly. Using a dust extractor can reduce dust-related hazards. h. Do not let familiarity gained from frequent use of the power tool allow you to become careless and ignore tool safety principles.

Inform yourself about the pillar drill before using it for the first time. If you are unfamiliar with the function of a pillar drill, get professional support. An instruction by an experienced and trained person is strongly recommended. Minimum age. The minimum age requirement of the operator of the machine is 16 years. Residual risks.
9 | Safety devices Safety devices serve to protect persons and material. Without intact safety devices serious injuries can occur. Danger! The pillar drill may only be operated with functioning safety devices. Switch off the machine immediately if you discover that a safety device is faulty or disassembled. All additional systems installed by the operator must be equipped with the prescribed safety devices.

16 | Assembling the pillar drill The NOVA Viking pillar drill comes with most parts pre-assembled. Power cable ATTENTION! The headstock is heavy and tends to tip over. The assembly should be carried out by two persons. Headstock Assembling the pillar drill to the base 1.

Handles Screw the quill driving handles into the holes on the pinion shaft. Mounting the drill chuck and chuck arbour Insert the chuck arbour into the pillar drill quill. Attention: Make sure the arbour tongue is facing the correct direction. If the chuck arbour is installed correctly, it will remain in the pillar drill.

Attaching the table Take the pillar drill table out of the packaging and inspect all surfaces for damage (e.g. stains, rust, fractures and scratches). Insert the table into the table arm. Loosen the clamping lever if necessary. This lever is used to lock the table. Loosen this lever if the table cannot be inserted easily.

Tighten the main bolt first and then the grub screw to fix the position. After setting the table tilt, tighten the main bolt first. Then, tighten the grub screw. 17 | Connection to the power Attention! • An improper power connection may result in an electric shock. • The unit must only be used in TN-Systems (neutral connected to earth). • To protect against electric shock, the operator must ensure that the machine is equipped with a protective device (residual current circuit breaker).
18 | Installation of the pillar drill Please note the following factors when selecting a location for your pillar drill in order to be able to use it in the best possible way: 1. Place the pillar drill near a power source and make sure that there is good lighting. Leave enough space around the machine in order to be able to swivel the table around.

20 | Operating the pillar drill Switching on This switch will light Connect to power source. up when the main power is turned on. Insert the plug into the socket and then turn on the pillar drill by switching the rocker switch to “I”.

Stop Press the <OFF> button to stop the pillar drill. Emergency stop Press / hit the emergency stop button on the control panel to bring the pillar drill immediately to a complete halt. Adjusting the speed Turn the dial to adjust the pillar drill speed at any time. Turn the dial in the clockwise direction to increase the speed. Turn the dial in the anti-clockwise direction to decrease the speed. You can change the speed at any time. Change of the measuring unit Three different measurement units can be displayed on the NOVA Viking screen: 1. Inches decimal value - rounded to 0.005” (default) 2. Inches fraction - 1/16 increments 3. Metric display - in millimetres Hold down the <Display / Cancel> button for 3 seconds until you hear a beep. After the beep, the displayed measurement unit will change.

Note: Switching between forward and reverse rotation is not possible while the motor of the pillar drill is running. The machine must be completely stationary to switch the direction. Zeroing / Referencing the depth stop This function will let the machine know where to start counting the depth from.

Lighting ON Lighting OFF Intermediate functions Depth stop Press the <Set Depth> button to activate the depth stop function. The depth stop icon will be blinking. Turn the dial to set the desired depth (in the currently selected unit). Turn the adjustment dial clockwise in order to set a deeper depth.

Quick set depth function This function provides a fast and precise method for setting the depth stop value. For this, extend the quill to the point at which you have reached the desired depth. Press and hold the <Set Depth> button for three seconds while holding the sleeve in position.

Electronic depth stop function Once the depth stop value is specified and saved, the electronic depth stop function is activated. This is also indicated by the highlighted depth stop icon on the screen. As the drill bit approaches the set value, the screen will start to blink and the machine will start to beep. The closer the drill bit gets to the set depth, the faster the beeping and the blinking.

Note: The self-start begins at approx. 7 mm from the top. This value is based on the absolute sensor readout value; therefore this threshold will not be affected by any depth value offset made by the user. With the self-start function activated, the pillar drill stops automatically when the quill extension is less than 6 mm.

Advanced functions Performing a factory reset Press and hold the <Self Start> button and briefly press the <OFF> button. Note: Do not release the <Self Start> button. Hold down the <Self Start> button for another 1-2 seconds and then release it. Press and Hold hold.

Extend the quill to the depth that is being displayed on the screen. Press the <Set Depth> button to calibrate the sensor at the specified depth. Unlocking the speed range to 5,000 revolutions per minute A maximum speed of 5,000 rpm can be selected for the NOVA Viking pillar drill (the default setting is 3,000 rpm). This speed is ideal for metal working purposes that require very high rotational speeds.
Hold down for another 1- 2 seconds. 22 | Care and maintenance Regular care and maintenance are essential for the long-term use of your pillar drill. Attention! Always disconnect the pillar drill from the power source before carrying out any maintenance procedure.

25 | Firmware update The HMI software plays an important role in the control and functionality of the NOVA Viking pillar drill. The firmware installed is responsible for controlling the features and performance of the pillar drill. A firmware upgrade is usually not necessary and should only be carried out in consultation with the manufacturer or dealer.
