Your Sony STR-DA777ES turntable may not be playing audible music when "Phono" is selected due to the following possible reasons:
1. Low Signal Output – The Phono input is designed for very low-level signals from a turntable. If you are using a turntable without a built-in preamp, you may need an external phono preamp.
2. Incorrect Connections – Ensure the turntable is properly connected to the "Phono" input on the receiver. If connected to a different input, the signal may not be amplified correctly.
3. Grounding Issue – If your turntable has a ground wire, ensure it is connected to the receiver’s ground terminal to prevent hum or weak signal.
4. Phono Input Sensitivity – The receiver's phono sensitivity is 5 mV. If your turntable's cartridge output is too low, it may not produce enough signal for audible playback.
5. Defective Cartridge or Stylus – Check if the turntable’s cartridge and stylus are in good condition and properly installed.
6. Mute or Incorrect Settings – Ensure the receiver is not muted and that the correct input is selected.
7. Faulty Phono Stage – If all connections are correct and other inputs work fine, the built-in phono stage may have a fault.
Check these factors to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
