how to change the mode on the calculator because when I do simple addition it doesn't work.

The HP 32SII calculator adds numbers in the X- and Y-registers and displays the result as a fraction. To switch to the current decimal display format, refer to chapter 5, "Fractions." If needed, press the appropriate mode key to switch between fraction and decimal modes.
